3 Easy Steps to Publishing Your Website
|
Thanks to the plethora of easy to use tools available on the Internet, publishing your website is simpler than ever. Ten years ago, you needed a degree in computer science or at least web design to get a competent website up and running, but today, you only need basic novice computer skills to start your own blog or even your own e-commerce website. There are three easy steps you’ll have to undertake before you can make your own website, but none of them are difficult.
First, you need to create your own website. You’ll need to decide what kind of website you want to have: a business site, a blog or some other kind of site. If you are simply starting a site for fun and for your family and friends to read, you don’t have to do a lot of prior planning. You likely already know what you want to write about and the path to publishing your website is clear. However, if you are looking to start your own business, you need to take special care that you have a business plan, a loan and a good idea of how e-commerce works. You can either design your own website or have it done for you by a professional firm. Once you have your website designed, you are one step closer to publishing.
Next, you need to choose a reliable web host that offers all of the features your website needs to be successful. If you’ve chosen to begin your own blog and you are going to be using PHP and MySQL, make sure you contact your host before you agree to any kind of hosting agreement and double check that they can, in fact, host a blog that uses those tools. The same goes for any kind of e-commerce website. If you are going to be publishing a website that requires a significant amount of storage and bandwidth, make sure you get an honest appraisal of the total cost of hosting each month. Part of publishing your website is shopping around for the best deal possible on hosting, and being sure that your host can provide the support you need.
Finally, you need to upload your site, in all of its various parts, to your web host’s servers so that it can be displayed on the Internet. Most websites use a simple FTP program to upload each individual page to the root directory of the server your website has been assigned to. If you’ve not used an FTP program in the past, they are very simple to use and only take a second to figure out. Depending on the size, publishing your website may take only a few seconds or it may take quite some time if you have lots of pictures and dozens of individual pages.
One final step on the road to publishing your website is to check out how it looks via every one of the popular browsers. Since Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari and Google Chrome all work slightly differently, you may need to tweak how your website looks so that it displays properly in all of the popular browsers.
